For 140 years, some of society’s most overlooked citizens have benefited from the programs we provide. Our work is divided into three divisions, each with a distinct practice area and population served:

  • Social Justice Services serves men and women transitioning out of prison and back into the community through a network of six residential reentry centers operated under contracts with federal, state, and county agencies. The division also runs a residential program for young adults with complex clinical needs.

  • Community Strategies supports adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities to live as independently as possible through a range of community-based residential options offering structure in a caring, home-like environment, as well as day programs.

  • The Crime and Justice Institute is a national-scale consulting practice that works with elected officials, justice system practitioners, policy makers, and thought leaders to effect significant reforms to promote safety and justice.

The CRJ Human Resources team is seeking an HR Generalist to join our team. In this new role, we are looking for someone who brings positive energy and excitement to their day-to-day work life and is looking for a broad HR opportunity. You will touch on all aspects of HR, lending your expertise and knowledge in defined content areas such as employee relations, payroll, benefits, reporting, and recruiting. This role is either an opportunity for a relatively new HR generalist to expand and build on their experience or a more senior HR professional to bring their wealth of knowledge to support the department goals.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provides back up support to both Payroll and Benefits Managers and areas.

  • Assists with the implementation of the in-house employee training system that addresses the company's training needs including, new employee orientation, onboarding, performance management, divisional cross training and employee engagement.

  • Provides necessary education and materials to managers and employees including workshops, manuals, employee handbooks, and standardized reports.

  • Assists with the development of Human Resources policies for the company with regard to employee relations.

  • Partners with management to communicate Human Resources policies, procedures, programs, and laws.

  • Recommends employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale and motivation.

  • Assists with the implementation of company safety and health programs. Tracks and posts OSHA-required data and files reports.

  • Helps to monitor the organization's culture so that it supports the attainment of the company's goals and promotes employee satisfaction.

  • Assists with the company-wide committees including the wellness, training, health and safety, activity, and diversity & inclusion and communications committees.

  • May support the recruitment process for exempt and nonexempt employees and interns using the standard recruiting and hiring practices and procedures necessary to recruit and hire a superior workforce.

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, or Organization Development or equivalent. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Three to five plus years of progressive experience in Human Resources positions.

  • Specialized training in employment law, compensation, organizational planning, organization development, employee relations, safety, training, and preventive labor relations, preferred.

  • Working knowledge of Windows Outlook, Microsoft Word, and proficiency in Excel.

  • Working knowledge of payroll software and ad-hoc reporting and HRIS systems - Ceridian (preferred), or ADP.

  • Communications skills, attention to detail, good organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines.

  • Experience in the administration of benefits and compensation programs and other Human Resources programs.

  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment.

  • Must include superior Excel skills and demonstrated high level competence in database management and record keeping.

Tasks

  • Process, verify, and maintain personnel related documentation, including staffing, recruitment, training, grievances, performance evaluations, classifications, and employee leaves of absence.
  • Record data for each employee, including such information as addresses, weekly earnings, absences, amount of sales or production, supervisory reports on performance, and dates of and reasons for terminations.
  • Explain company personnel policies, benefits, and procedures to employees or job applicants.
  • Provide assistance in administering employee benefit programs and worker's compensation plans.
  • Answer questions regarding examinations, eligibility, salaries, benefits, and other pertinent information.
  • Prepare and set up for new employee orientations.
  • Gather personnel records from other departments or employees.
  • Examine employee files to answer inquiries and provide information for personnel actions.
  • Search employee files to obtain information for authorized persons and organizations, such as credit bureaus and finance companies.
  • Compile and prepare reports and documents pertaining to personnel activities.
  • Interview job applicants to obtain and verify information used to screen and evaluate them.
  • Process and review employment applications to evaluate qualifications or eligibility of applicants.
  • Inform job applicants of their acceptance or rejection of employment.
  • Select applicants meeting specified job requirements and refer them to hiring personnel.
  • Arrange for advertising or posting of job vacancies and notify eligible workers of position availability.
  • Request information from law enforcement officials, previous employers, and other references to determine applicants' employment acceptability.
  • Administer and score applicant and employee aptitude, personality, and interest assessment instruments.
  • Prepare badges, passes, and identification cards, and perform other security-related duties.
  • Arrange for in-house and external training activities.

  • Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Personnel and Human Resources - Knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, labor relations and negotiation, and personnel information systems.
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
