Human Rights Watch (HRW) is a non-governmental global community based in New York City that performs human rights research and activism. The organisation pressures states, decision makers, industries, and individual perpetrators of human rights to condemn violence and uphold human rights. As a founder member of the Global Movement to Ban Landmines, Human Rights Watch shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 and played a leading role in the 2008 treaty banning incendiary weapons. In 2017, the operating expenditures of the company totaled $75.5 million. As a private American NGO in 1978, Human Rights Watch was founded by Robert L. Bernstein and Aryeh Neier. Kenneth Roth, who has held the post since 1993, is the new HRW executive officer.
