IBM is the only place where you can enter any career path you want and when you want. IBM provides a fully funded Learning & Knowledge department that helps its employees obtain the best and most expensive certifications, tranings and credentials for free. At IBM, employees have access to multiple sources of knowledge, databases and information all via IBM's own platforms such as IBM Business Institute, W3, Blue Rain, Lighthouse and many more.

Pros and Cons
Career growth, experience, diversity of knowledge and insights
slow promotion, less authority in roles, IBM tools only

IBM bought the ATT Desktop Support contract in 2008. They took away bonuses, ended raises, and unloaded multiple roles and more territory that was previously done by multiple people. After the contract of two years in which I held multiple positions they oursourced the enter Desktop Support department and laid all Desktop Support employees off.

Pros and Cons
Learned multiple IT roles
They worked me to the point of exhaustion, never gave me a raise or bonus, and then outsourced

Working at IBM was an experience filled with its own unique set of highs and lows. On one hand, the structured work environment provided a stable and predictable schedule, embodying the essence of work-life balance with its unwavering 8-hour workdays and 40-hour weeks, meriting a modest two-star rating in this aspect. The benefits were nice.though standard Medical and Dental, and with the same provider as 3 of my other employers therefor nothing to write home about. However, despite my significant contributions, including spearheading several large initiatives that positively impacted the company over my six-year tenure, the lack of recognition was palpable. This oversight led me to give only a one-star rating for recognition. Otherwise the routine satisfaction derived from a well-balanced work schedule was also nice. I was expecting quite a bit more given at orientation they were going on about what ir means to be an IBMer which got me hyped up only to leave feeling it was standard.

Pros and Cons
Cant really say, it was a typical job.
No cons either, my manager was the best...but again a standard tech job.

I loved my job at IBM. I was hired on a temporary contract while I was in college. IBM at the time had no permanent positions open. They kept me longer than my original contract and I received nothing but praise from my managers. I was finally let go as no permanent positions opened up while I was there. I would gladly take a job back with this company any day.

While at IBM I was tasked with the job of creating automation tools and web applications that managed remote consoles, detail system lookup information for the IT Support Desk, detail system data lookup, change coordination tool for scheduling work and notifying support contracts for application and building work schedules. I also build with team a tool that analyzed system security policies between IBM and CenturyLink. I was also apart of a team to automate the management of remote consoles.

Early on, I was teamed up with a mentor. Many people, late in their career liek myself, may think a mentor isn't needed but believe it or not you do! It's like a buddy system and it's good to have someone you trust to help you or just talk to for clearing out those weekly blockers. Also, IBM/Kyndryl was a very large company but their structure was designed to move large projects while feeling like a small business.

Mentoring

As a receptionist, I would answer 300-400 phone calls a day, with 18 incoming lines. Since I spoke Spanish, I was routed all of the Spanish speaking clients that had trouble with their English. Took and forwarded messages to the appropriate representative (72 of them), in addition to the 5 executives on the floor. One hour for lunch and I could either eat inside at one of the various cafeterias in the High Rise or go outside and eat at the Bonaventure Hotel.

Pros and Cons
I could participate on one hour workshop, usually during lunchtime.

Manufacturing was not my first calling, In all honesty I didn't have much choice. The economy in Vermont had taken a tumble and I found myself in the middle of a recession , so I started as a temp for $6.66 , well actually $7.77 with the shift premium nights. In a short time I was made a permanent. I did get raises, and some recognition. They resisted putting me into maintenance, partly because I had communications degree and not a technical degree. They did let me do the work but as a manufacturing maintenance person for 2/3 the pay . It continued up through the ranks and a dozen years later I was the lowest paid senior tech in the dept. I worked on everything , fixed about 90% of it. I also worked on some of IBM's new products. The memory boom, yup ! Cell phones those too. 300mm all over it. in 2008 it all came to a end. By then the surrounding area was saturated with 10 years of layoffs. Soon the whole plant was sold.. so it's all history.

Pros and Cons
Company recognition, opportunities, good pay and benefits
The ism's, cronyisms, nepotism etc. they killed the golden goose.

I was hired as a temporary salesperson on inbound calls for help with current customers of AS 400 or a System 36, who did not have a Support Contract. There were 33 of us and there were times every day that our computers crashed. I began working with IT and ended up keeping the computers running when I knew what the fix was. Eventually I was hired in the outbound Sales division to keep 130 workstations running. I also had to learn new software, install and teach each member how to use it. Imagine not going out of the box and only did sales????

Pros and Cons
You are congratulated and compensated for learning more than needed.

I was working at a company that converted from manual and unit record process ing to computer. I was included in some training for that project because I was familiar with the applications being upgraded and because I did well in my test scores from tests provided and evaluated by IBM. About six months later I decided that the only way to learn programming was to change jobs where I could work as a computer operator and pay for programing training as I worked. When I put my name out with various agencies one of the first responses was about a job at IBM which woulod mean free training. I went innto IBM and they interviewed me and gave me a test. I must have done well on the test as they hired me the next day. They have great training programs and employees are expected to take the courses as part of their job. I learned more during my year and a half at IBM than I did in college. It was my best decision. Once you are an employee at IBM you are accepted other places very readily.

I had a 12 month experience with IBM. After 1 month of training (away from home) and barley developing my sales territory, IBM laid off myself and 25,000 others. IBM made a huge investment in myself (training, travel, etc) and my peers and just threw it away to meet some budget. Most people laid off were older. As a stock holder in IBM I consider what they did as fiscally incompetent. Turned my life upside down at ag 62. I once had respect for IBM but no longer.

I started out working in Service repair center(Tucson, Az)(Shipping/receiving) Closed and moved to new location.(Newark New Jersey) Decided to take another job in Phoeinx, Az) Working Administration job in Marketing Branch Office. Was a great choice. IBM has the greatest information system in world. I learn more about marketing and everything about how to do my admin job which consisted of a large variety of things. Which made the job challenging and very rewarding.
