About Inpatient Coder

What does an Inpatient Coder do?

We, as inpatient coders, work to designate codes for medical treatments and diagnoses for inpatient facilities. Inpatient facilities are similar to medical facilities that accommodate different patients who need more extensive care, involving over 24 hours or overnight stays. We perform inpatient coding services for every day a patient remains admitted to the facility. Our duties also include the identification of potential care quality, discrepancies, and billing issues. We research and analyze data requirements for reimbursement.

Core tasks:

  • analyzing medical records and marking documentation deficiencies
  • serving as subject matter and resource expert to other coding staff
  • reviewing and verifying documentation supports procedures, diagnoses, and treatment outcomes
  • identifying procedural and diagnostic information
