The Lensa Index: 2022 Update
What’s happening in the US job market in 2022?
We all know that searching and applying for jobs can be a long and challenging process. It can be difficult keeping up momentum in your job search the longer it drags on, and rejections do nothing to help your morale in this difficult time.
Different job seekers will have differing priorities. Some may simply be after a job following a period of unemployment, while others could be looking to boost their income or change career altogether.
Whatever your reason for searching for a new job, it is undoubtedly helpful to understand a bit about the employment market and the multitude of job opportunities that are out there.
Following on from our first Lensa Index in mid 2021, which looked at the American job market in the first two quarters of the year, we wanted to provide a fresh update looking at the latter half of 2021. With the Great Resignation seeing huge numbers of people ditching their jobs to pursue different careers and vaccine mandates adding fuel to the fire, 2021 has been a tumultuous period for the American jobs market.
So, how has the jobs landscape changed going into 2022? And what are the most recent trends in the USA job market?
Which states have the most job opportunities?
Here we can see which states have the highest number of unique job listings. This indicates where the majority of economic activity in the country takes place, making them highly attractive to job seekers from all corners of the USA.
Unique job listings: 8,368,900
The state with by far the highest number of job listings is California, where there have been as many as 8.37 million in just the latter half of 2021. California has one of the largest economies in the world and is home to a huge number of tech giants, start-ups and other business that help to generate this huge pool of job opportunities.
Unique job listings: 5,935,907
Texas once again takes second place behind California, having seen 5.94 million unique job listings in the state in the last two quarters of 2021. The world’s 9th largest economy by GDP, Texas benefits from highly productive oil and agriculture industries, while being home to many large corporations such as Tesla, Exxon Mobil, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
Unique job listings: 4,755,421
Claiming third place with 4.76 million job listings is New York, home to the Big Apple and the largest economy on the East Coast. New York City has long attracted workers and businesses alike, providing a cultural melting pot of ideas and innovation. Our previous third place holder, Pennsylvania, came in sixth with 3.93 million unique job listings.
Which states have the most job opportunities per person?
To allow for the varying sizes of different states, we have also calculated the number of unique job listings per 100,000 people. This will allow us to compare the number of jobs available in each state while taking into consideration the potential competition from other jobseekers.
Unique job listings per 100,000: 46,411
Vermont has the highest number of unique job listings per 100,000 people in the state, sitting at 46,411. This north-eastern state actually had one of the lowest numbers of unique job listings, placing 45th overall, but it’s small population means that you could face the least competition when applying for work in the state.
Unique job listings per 100,000: 41,664
Iowa takes second place with 41,664 unique job listings per 100,000 people. The state is home to many large employers including aerospace technology giant Rockwell Collins and global financial services company Principal Financial Group.
Unique job listings per 100,000: 38,604
The third best state in the country for job listings per head is Wyoming, where there were 38,604 jobs posted for every 100,000 people. Wyoming actually had the fewest overall job posting of any state, but like Vermont has so few residents that there is significantly less competition for work in this state than busier, more populated parts of the country.
Which industries are hiring the most in every state?
Every state has its own particular make-up of industries and companies that come together to form its overall economy. These economies vary greatly depending on the geography, the population, natural resources and many other factors.
Depending on what industry you’re interested in working in, some states may provide more opportunities than others. With this in mind, we have identified the top industry in each state by the number of job listings. Which part of the country suits your career ambitions?

States with the most job clicks
The great resignation has seen vast numbers of people throwing in the towel and quitting their jobs, which in turn means that they’ll need to be searching and applying for new jobs.
Here we can see which states have had the most job clicks in the latter half of 2021. The number of job advert clicks that an area records could indicate a higher number of jobseekers. It can also be a measure of how difficult it is to get a job in different parts of the country. Here you can see which states received the most job applications in the latter half of 2021.
Cities with the most job clicks
We can also measure the number of job clicks by city, as well as state, giving us a more precise picture of the job seeking hotspots around the country. Here you can see the top 100 cities with the most job applications in the second half of 2021.
New York takes the top spot with the most job clicks of any US city. The number of clicks here could have been fuelled by both the fallout of the great resignation boom, and by the New York vaccine mandates that require many workers to be fully jabbed.
The most popular companies for applicants
In this section we look at the companies that receive the most clicks from jobseekers, indicating that they are the most attractive or widespread companies in the US jobs market. Here we can see as many as the top 50 companies for clicks, giving us an in-depth overview of the state of the American jobs market.
E-commerce giant Amazon is the company with the most clicks, making it the most popular company for applicants in 2021. Considering the sheer scale of Amazon and its vast fulfilment centers, it’s no surprise that it can attract so many workers to its ranks.
Most attractive industries in 2021
In this section we can see the change in the number of clicks that companies in different industries received on their job listings between the Q1 2021 and Q4. This data identifies the industries that are rising in popularity the fastest among applicants.
Farming, Fishing and Forestry Occupations saw by far the largest increase in clicks through 2021, with 546.7% more clicks in Q4 than in Q1. This suggests that people are more eager than ever to get outside and escape their desk jobs and office life. Following almost 2 years of covid restrictions, lockdowns and disrupted workplaces, this change in attitude is entirely understandable. Conversely, Architecture and Engineering Occupations saw the largest decrease in clicks on job listings, falling by 34.86% during 2021.
We wanted to update our previous Lensa Index with more recent data from the second half of 2021. To do this, we used our own internal data collected via the Lensa website, recording the number of clicks a job listings receive in each state and dividing them by industry.
We then used population data from World Population Review to calculate the rate of job listings per 100,000 residents in each state. Additionally, we recorded the number of searches in each state and also found the 100 US cities with the highest number of job searches.
We also added new sections looking at the companies that received the most clicks on their job listings, as well as % change in the number of clicks jobs in different industries received over the course of 2021.
