Intermediate Unit 1 (IU1) is one unit of the 29 Intermediate Units. It was made in 1971 to serve the schools in Fayette, Greene, and Washington Counties. Intermediate Units are headed by an executive director and governed by boards of directors made up of members of member school districts' school boards. Intermediate Unit 1 leased space in California, Pennsylvania, and hired 245 people during its first year of operation.
