The Office of Visitor Services (OVS), is the principal office at theSmithsonian responsible for understanding, designing and improvingall stages of a visitors journey, from planning, to visit andpost-visit experiences. The Office enables the Smithsonians missionthrough its activities as the primary point of contact forSmithsonian visitors. In addition, OVS provides internal services toSmithsonian staff who serve visitors, including over 6,000volunteers.

  • Provides day-to-day support and monitoring of digital assetcontent management systems and relational database systemsincluding troubleshooting and maintaining up to date andaccurate content.
  • Assesses the effectiveness and performance of relationaldatabase management systems, web applications, and contentmanagement systems.
  • Recommends improvements and innovations for OVS IT systems thatincrease usage rates and user satisfaction ratings.
  • Partners with vendor development teams on system designs andsystem release procedures.
  • Ensures business needs are met during development, beta testing,installation, acceptance testing, and evaluation of IT systems.
  • Develops training strategies and tactics on how to use avolunteer management database.
  • Provides advice and guidance on all technical matters of thevolunteer management database.

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one yearof specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 9 levelin the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For thisposition Specialized experience is defined as providing day-to-daysupport and monitoring of content management systems; assessing theperformance and effectiveness of IT systems; collaborating on thedevelopment, improvement, deployment and/or upgrade of IT systems;and providing training to users on all aspects of a volunteermanagement database.

  1. Attention to Detail- Is thorough when performing work andconscientious about attending to detail.
  2. Customer Service- Works with clients and customers (that is,any individuals who use or receive the services or products thatyour work unit produces, including the general public,individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, ororganizations outside the Government) to assess their needs,provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, orsatisfy their expectations; knows about available products andservices; is committed to providing quality products andservices.
  3. Oral Communication- Expresses information (for example,ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, takinginto account the audience and nature of the information (forexample, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear andconvincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends tononverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracyand relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generateand evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteerwork done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional;philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, andskills and can provide valuable training and experience thattranslates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit forall qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will beconsidered to determine the total number of years and months ofexperience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hoursworked each week.

Or Education: Three full years of progressively higher levelgraduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree relatedto the position may be substituted to meet the experiencerequirements.

Graduate Education: Degree in computer science, engineering,information science, information systems management, mathematics,operations research, statistics, or technology management ordegree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or moreof the fields identified above and required the development oradaptation of applications, systems or networks.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined tomeet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year ofexperience and a half year of education in the field may bequalifying.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet thequalifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basicqualifications described above. The applications that meet the basicqualifications will be evaluated further against the followingcriteria:

  1. Ability to use programming languages and tools.

  2. Ability to support users of relational database systems.

  3. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical hardware and/orsoftware issues for digital asset content management systems.

  4. Ability to assess the performance and effectiveness of ITsystems.
  5. Ability to communicate orally in order to maintain vendorrelationships and collaborate on the development, improvement,deployment and/or upgrade of IT systems.
  6. Ability to lead user training for a volunteer managementdatabase and assist users with all aspects of the system.
