What does an IT Specialist do?

In the role of an IT Specialist, we oversee all IT needs of a company. We are responsible for installing and upgrading components, assisting with network administration, setting up software, and resolving all IT support issues. We maintain and improve the technical systems of a company. We ensure all employees have the technology they need to complete their work. We make sure that the organization’s important files and information are safe and intact. We monitor security certificates and company compliance with requirements.

Core tasks:

  • offer technical support to company staff and troubleshoot computer problems
  • install new software and hardware components
  • evaluate IT systems and ensure they meet the necessary demands
  • assist with network administration tasks
  • ensure data storage is safe and secure

When the IT folks are doing their jobs well, you don’t know they are there. Everything is working smoothly. The higher-ups think they aren’t doing anything, yet costing a lot of money, so they trim some budget. I’ve seen this a lot in my 30 years.
