Sandia National Laboratories is seeking an exceptional leader for the position of Corporate Ombudsman. The Ombuds Office reports directly to Sandia’s Executive Chief of Staff (COS) and serves as a confidential, independent, informal, and impartial resource to help members of the Laboratories workforce address job-related concerns or goals. The COS provides direct support to the Labs director addressing strategic, operational, and administrative needs. The COS interfaces with external customers including DoD, DOE, NNSA, other national labs, the U.S. military, and local, state, and national political appointees and elected officials. The Corporate Ombudsman will provide services consistent with the International Ombudsman Association’s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. Services include individual or team consultations around a wide variety of issues, facilitated processes such as mediation, and skills building in areas such as communication, management, and professional development. The Ombuds will be expected to exercise good judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for performing the duties, educating the workforce about the office, and reporting key trends to Laboratories leadership.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Manage the Ombuds Office and work to resolve conflicts at the lowest levels through consultation, facilitated negotiations, training, and coaching.
  • Function as a neutral third party and help generate options for managing conflict.
  • Provides early warning of organizational concerns, upward feedback, or systemic needs for improvement, and gives executive management insight for consideration in decision-making.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and (5) years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level Security clearance.

Desired:

  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Deep knowledge of conflict resolution and mediation techniques, methods, and principles; skill in developing effective options for conflict resolution.
  • Understanding of applicable laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures, research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information.
  • Grasp of program development principles, concepts, and best practices including skill in establishing, setting, and implementing the vision, program direction, goals, and objectives for the Ombuds Office.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills including effective listening, discernment, empathy and sensitivity; expert critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Leadership, program management, and collaboration expertise.
  • Skills in developing and delivering effective training programs and presentations.
  • Ability to identify systemic issues and recommend change; skill to work collaboratively to build and sustain highly effective and positive relationships at all organizational levels to promote systemic change.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, across multiple dimensions including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, and organizational hierarchy.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence to interact with diverse colleagues and visitors on highly sensitive and complex matters; ability to assess one's own behaviors and the impact on others.
  • Knowledge of Laboratories culture, organizational structure, policies, procedures, processes, and tools including employee complaint and grievance mechanisms.
  • Extensive experience providing organizational ombuds services.
  • 6+ years of ombuds/conflict resolution experience.
  • Advanced mediation training.
  • Advanced ombuds professional training.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
