Joint BioEnergy Institute

The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is a Bioenergy Research Center of the United States Department of Energy (DOE) dedicated to the development of advanced biofuels—liquid fuels derived from solar energy contained in plant biomass that can be used to replace gasoline, diesel, and jet fuels. JBEI is based in Emeryville, a biotech hotspot in the Bay Area. The cutting-edge laboratories are located between Powell and 59th Streets in the EmeryStation East building. The vice presidents (VPs) and deputy VPs of the science divisions, the chief executive officer, the chief science and technology officer, and the chief operating officer lead the JBEI research committee.
