Grocery Department Manager
Atlanta, GA - November 27, 2024
I have been at The Kroger Company since May of 1996 and currently still employed. I started out a stock clerk went to be a dairy lead. 2008 I became a Grocery manager, transferred due to the store closing. Stepped down from Grocery Manager in 2021 and just recently got back into the position in August of 2024.

I worked at Kroger Market place almost 4 years in the drug dept. When orientation was going on I was so excited to work there, especially after 12yrs of fast food management. It was like what? Benefits? First month it was good. I clock out when scheduled time says. (I was elated at this). Then I had to fight for experience pay took a couple of months. Making $8 an hour until then as an adult with bills. My union rep. was fighting it. Soon then I was told to unload trucks with a power jack (never used 1) After we had to break down pallets sort into depts 6-12 each delivery. Some totes weighing 50+lbs. December 2020 I couldn't walk for 3 months. I was on a medical leave of absence and was fired. Insurance gone. I had to pay out of pocket for my surgery 4 screws and a plate I have. Tailbone slide quarter inch over. I hurt everyday and only 42. Had to appeal to unemployment I couldn't get because it was labeled terminated. Just pain and debt now. Worst company profit hungry only.
Pros and Cons
lunch breaks, benefits,
Horrible treatment by management unprofessional atmosphere

They have complete disregard to the employees scheduling needs. There is no work/life balance. The final issue was when I had to work 11 self checkout lanes alone for 4 hours. Seriously under appreciated and felt I was not valued as an employee at all
Pros and Cons
Customers are generally enjoyable.

One thing that I found hard was work life balance. In this day in age people don't have the same work ethics anymore. You are required to be the best, yet other don't have to. Your expected to just deal with things regardless of if it's right or wrong.
Pros and Cons
They have amazing benefits.
You have to put up with people that don't want to work.

About a month ago, the company had a employee barbecue. They were free burgers, and hotdogs for all. this is almost done for upper management to show their appreciation towards the Kroger team.
Pros and Cons
Flexible hours and easy access to food for meals
No employee parking this is a great inconvenienced because at my Kroger we only have paid parking

Kroger use to be a great company to work for. They have really gone down the last few years. It seems like they are more about the money then the people anymore. The manager that is currently at the store I am at is constantly threatening, our jobs and livelihood. This is not an environment that I like working in anymore.
Pros and Cons

Only reason I left was because of arthritic knees. Hard to stand for so many hours at my age, with arthritis. I enjoyed the people, but most of them are already gone. It's under new management, so not sure what the working environment is any more. I still shop there though.

Operations Supervisor
Keller, TX - January 28, 2023
I worked as a Operations Supervisor at the Kroger DC in Keller TX for 2 and a half years. When I first started there it was a good place to work. The work was challenging, but we worked as a team to get the job done. This all fell apart when Kroger took over the management from penske. Kroger uper management shows little to no considration to their employees health and well-being. The last straw for me was when they fired a Supervisor who got hit by a forklift while doing a task he was mandated to do by uper management. I worked hard for Kroger, but I resigned because I see they don't care about their employees.
Pros and Cons
The pay is good.
No work life balance. Unsafe work conditions

I worked there for 10 years. I worked days, nights, and weekends. I worked just about every job in that plant, you would think they would consider me an asset since I was one of the ones who helped train new management how to do what we do. They fired me a week before Christmas with no last chance, knowing I have a family. Real cut throat operation they have going on.
Pros and Cons
They pay very decent
management is driving that company into the ground. They don't care about their employees either.

I started working for Kroger while background screening was pending but because I recently relocated to a totally different state, it took a month to complete it and ultimately my screening was inconclusively "flagged" so my employment was temporary.

Zero work life balance if you are a manager at Kroger's and if they feel like things aren't getting done they will put you on as many days as they want to you can go weeks without a day off. Lucky if you get to take any vacation unless your are a bigshot manager .Managers can take as much time as they want and get huge bonus well everybody slaves away for the lazy managers . Also the pay is horrible for such a huge company even stockers they start them out at $10.00 and can't figure out why they cant get any help or good help really sad.
Pros and Cons
Stable job
Bad pay overworked no vacation if you are a manager lower manager.

Always short-handed always had to do 10 times you're working other people's work while other people got to stand around. Always seen favoritism even with new people that got to stand around. How to do three different jobs for the payment of one. We get full time hours and then they would care of my house was going into foreclosure because it didn't have enough hours to work. Gave him 4 years of my life did not get full time but then sometimes get full time hours it was crazy. Customers are always complaining cuz we're always short staffed I was expected us to do our work and somebody else's work that was lazy. Want to make less money in fuel when you're out there in the cold and dealing with trash heavy trash that leaks all over the place and customers that don't know how to pump gas. The offer full-time work but never give anybody full-time work.
Pros and Cons
They are union

Pharmacy Tech
January 9, 2022
I was hired as a pharmacy technician at Kroger. It was tempting to take the position as the pay was nice. I have five years experience as a pharmacy tech and they pay $0.75/year (with a five-year max) experience on top of the base pay so that gave me a starting pay at $3.75 more than the original starting pay. But I read the reviews about working for the company and it did not seem right for me and my family at the time as many of the reviews stated that employees are not valued for their work. That and, although the company site states that the schedule would be flexible, the reviews said otherwise.
Pros and Cons
Competitive pay
Not flexible with hours

Rochester, MI - November 20, 2021
The overnight crew was fabulous, very welcoming, and made the work environment great. The only complaint I have is the pay. They want you to bust your butt for $11 and it is not worth all the amount of work and training you need to go through. They need to be paying at least $20/hr for the amount of labor and quickness they expect from the employees.
Pros and Cons
Great benefits
Pay needs to be adjusted

Clicklist Associate
Lambertville, MI - November 11, 2021
I worked in Kroger Clicklist for a year. A few things were evident when I left: the entire place was being run by people who were incompetent and it is a surprise the company has stayed afloat all these years. The management never knew what was going on and they had no clue on how to fix situations. They were poorly trained from everything that I could see. The management and leadership in general had a very high turnover rate and when manager was so bad that they had to take action they would just move them to another store. Coorporate had little to no clue what was happening in the store, but would set rules for the staff (ex. Clicklist loaders could only take drinks in the breakroom despite being in an unairconditioned room or loading cars in 100* heat for 7.5 hours) and the management would not fight for the employees best interest. The only way that things would go in the employees favor is if we got the union involved.
Pros and Cons
Amazing coworkers, decent pay, flexible hours (early morning, mid-day, or late)
Horrible management, lack of recognition
