La Clínica was established in 1971 to overcome health barriers and to build safer lives for the underserved. Today, La Clínica is the first option for offering multilingual, entirely affordable health care facilities in the East Bay, regardless of the amount of income or insurance coverage of the customer. La Clínica was born through the actions of a group of UC Berkeley students in 1977 and has been delivering health care services to the East Bay communities since then. The above-mentioned students, mindful of the disparity in health coverage for low-income communities, became convinced that everyone needs access to high-quality, culturally acceptable health care, regardless of their ability to pay. Affected by the philosophy of Martin Luther King and Cesar Chavez, these students and other community members worked feverishly to establish a community-based clinic. They decided to take action to opened up a storefront hospital in East Oakland.
