Job Description

The Lab Supervisor reports directly to the Technical Director. Responsibilities encompass all the daily
operations of the Special Coagulation Lab. Coordinates work to provide timely completion of all tests;
responsible for weekly payroll and scheduling of lab personnel (including time off); monitoring of test
procedures as necessary to insure conformance to lab quality control criteria, and hospital policies and
procedures; provides training, monitors competency, and delivers on-time performance reviews and
corrective action to staff; answering questions, conferring with hospital staff or patients; insuring that the
lab spaces are consistently maintained in a hygienically safe and functional condition. Oversees and
maintains QC, QA, quality control logs, maintenance logs, quality assurance logs, proficiency testing
logs; monitors/documents proficiency testing; purchases supplies, equipment, and oversees
maintenance of all equipment. Submits reports, as required, by the Technical Director and/or Medical
Director. Develops and maintains competencies for Special Coagulation Lab personnel. Assists in the
implementation of hospital, departmental, and laboratory policies, as defined by Laboratory Management
and the hospital

• Performs, demonstrates, and teaches techniques for all clinical laboratory tests provided in the
special coagulation laboratory.
• Provides smooth operation of the Special Coagulation Lab; maintains adequate coverage; and insures that all personnel are adequately trained and that they maintain competency. • Oversees all quality control procedures, maintenance on instruments and may troubleshoot instrument malfunctions. Oversees reagent crossover and validation studies. Performs patient testing as needed. • Evaluates new tests, products; suggesting to the Technical Director and/or Medical Director any appropriate changes in test methods or equipment; functions as liaison with sales representatives and the Lab/hospital. Orders supplies, and equipment as needed from an appropriate vendor. • Oversees instruction of pathology residents, hematology fellows, and students in Coagulation procedures • Maintains close liaison and cooperation with other lab sections and hospital staff to provide coordination of activities which affect patient care. Functions as resource person for Central Processing and medical/ nursing staff regarding diagnostic testing in the Special Coagulation Lab. • Maintains competency in the use of Sunquest and Epic information systems. Primary lab resource for LIS testing/training and development. Performs minor maintenance on computer terminals, as necessary; troubleshoots minor software and hardware malfunctions; notifies IS Help Desk of major malfunctions or problems. • Attends daily coagulation rounds (when possible) with laboratory director and pathology resident and provides opportunities for lab staff to attend as well • Attends departmental meetings and serves on committees as directed by the Technical Director. • Resource/consultant for unusual/abnormal patient findings, and instrument technical problems. • May function as Technical Director at times when Technical Director is not available. HUMAN RESOURCES • Conducts interviews and makes hiring decisions in consultation with the Technical Director. • Ensures proper department orientation for all new employees. Oversees continuing education for all lab employees. Develops and implements internal competencies for all staff and maintains documentation of same. Coordinates/conducts training for lab staff on new methods/procedures. • Implements /documents employee corrective action with consultation from Technical Director, Lab Director and/or Human Resources, as requested or applicable. • Assists in analysis for new FTE requests as requested or applicable. • Prepares and conducts performance evaluations of lab staff, use of Peoplesoft to complete HR process as requested or applicable. • Oversees/prepares staffing schedules. Payroll report submission and/or approval. Use of Kronos and Peoplesoft for HR management of new hires and transfer of staff, as required. REGULATORY/COMPLIANCE/SAFETY • Coordinates proficiency testing and correlations, PT review and investigates PT deficiencies according to lab policy as requested or applicable. Completes and maintains documentation as required by lab policy and regulatory standards. Assures that tests are done and submitted in a timely manner. Evaluates survey results, implements corrective action and/or changes in procedures when necessary.
• Follows all safety policies and procedures (including infection control and hazardous material). Responds to and notifies Technical Director and/or Safety Officer of unsafe conditions. Successfully participates in safety education and competency activities. Recommends appropriate policy and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Provides appropriate training, equipment, and education to protect staff and visitors from unsafe conditions. • May function as Lab Safety Officer. • Writes and updates instrument and general laboratory procedures; ensures that procedures are reviewed annually. Implements new policies and procedures, as needed. • Prepares various statistical and narrative reports regarding budgets, test volumes, QC, QA, etc. Carry through to completion special projects as assigned by the Technical Director. • Coordinates monitoring of lab performance/regulatory compliance. Reports regulatory deficiencies to the Technical Director and Lab Director as appropriate. Coordinates the preparation of all lab staff for unannounced Joint Commission and other regulatory agency surveys, as requested or applicable. Investigates and follows up for Safety Reports as requested. • Attends educational seminars and conferences to remain current with technological advancements and trends with Technical Director approval. FINANCIAL • Aids Technical Director in developing the yearly operating budget process. • Monitors test volumes and vendor pricing on a routine basis. LEADERSHIP • Builds and maintains ongoing working relationships with lab staff, clinical and physician staff to facilitate positive staff morale and optimal productivity and efficiency. • Supports, promotes and demonstrates MGH customer service philosophy. • Promotes and initiates active communication with leadership, staff, and other departments. • Maintains close cooperation and liaison with other departments and administrative sections of the department and hospital to provide coordination of activities, which affect patient care. • Participates in strategic process and systems improvement initiatives that support departmental goals targeting patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, quality and safety, expense and revenue management, and regulatory compliance

Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Lab Science
Active national general certification or categorical certification in a relevant specialty from approved agency required
Minimum 6 years of progressively more responsible experience with a minimum of 1 year in a supervisory role.
Demonstrated knowledge specific to hematology and coagulation testing

Minimum 3 years as SMT or TS in a relevant specialty at MGH and
Active national general certification or categorical certification in a relevant specialty and
Total of 2 consecutive years performance that meet expectations
Meets continuing education requirements according to lab specific policies

Knowledge of Sunquest and EPIC IS systems is preferred.
