Land O’ Lakes is an American member-owned agricultural cooperative which was established on July 8, 1921 with its headquarters based in Arden Hills, Minnesota. It was initially founded by representatives from 320 cooperative creameries in Saint Paul, Minnesota as the Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association. The organization aimed to improve marketing and quality of butter, and thus the profitability of dairying. The Land O’ Lakes comprises 1,959 direct producer-members, 751 member-cooperatives, and about 10,000 employees who process and distribute products for about 300,000 agricultural producers handling about 12 billion pounds of milk every year and serving producers, animal owners and their families. It is ranked third on the National Cooperative Bank 100 list of mutual and cooperatives and is one of the leading producers of butter and cheese in the United States.
