LAUSD was founded in 1853 with a mission to double the growth on the state Academic Performance Index (API); enhance the graduation rate and pass rate on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and other academic aspects. LAUSD registers more than 640,000 students in kindergarten to K12th grade, in nearly 900 schools, and 187 public charter schools. LAUSD students are not only performing good in academic but also good at extra curriculum activities including sports. LA schools present the winners of the United States Academic Decathlon championships-12-than any other district in this States. Additionally, LAUSD students are performing outstanding as an individual and team in areas like science, language, arts, mathematics, foreign and dual languages, social studies, business, and entrepreneurial skills, the visual and performing arts, and athletics. Today, the district upholds 115 plus new schools and campuses, thanks to the nation's largest public works project, funded by bond measures, a testament to broad voter support.
