Southeast Toyota Distributors is the world’s largest independent distributor of Toyotas. The Quality Assistance Competency Center is a new department formed as a centralization of QA and Testing resources from multiple Service Delivery (development) teams. As a QA Manager of Information Technology at JM Family Enterprises, you will be responsible and accountable for day-to-day management of quality assurance, quality engineering, process quality assistance, testing,and other related roles. This role will provide technical direction and oversight to lead the team through the transformation required to ensure modern software testing practices and test automation are being applied with rigor equally and consistently across four different Service Delivery teams. You’ll directly supervise QA portfolio leads, software quality engineers, contract testers, test automation engineers, and other QA professionals.

Candidate must be a proven leader in IT with experience managing the quality of delivery for complex multi-technology solutions. Candidate will be responsible for setting the bar for Software Quality processes across the organization, and leading the team through the changes required to ensure that this bar is achieved and maintained. Candidate must possess experience with developing Testing and Quality Assistance teams as well as championing change. Candidate must collaborate with long-tenured QA associates, while providing leadership, insight, and guidance on overall testing and quality processes. The job entails leveraging the team to ensure approved policies and practices are followed, measuring product and process quality, and collaborating on the standardization of the tools, techniques, staffing, and methodologies that ensure the efficient release of quality products and solutions. Due to an emphasis on standardizing the automation of tests and processes, the candidate should be familiar with modern techniques for automated testing, ideally with experience using purchased testing tools and custom developed test code.

Candidate will combine management expertise and technical chops in the efficient execution of these goals. You understand that automation is core to scaling and delivery velocity. Individuals in this role must understand the roles of the Software Quality Assurance team within the SDLC and be able to implement best practices and standard policies and procedures. Candidate should possess the ability to motivate the team and to cultivate a trusting culture, achieving software engineering excellence. This role is responsible for providing guidance to the team to ensure both team and organizational objectives are met. You will mentor the team in program level, project level, and quality governance decision making and execution.

The following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Directly manage a team responsible for designing test strategies, developing testing schedules, writing test plans and test cases, and executing against the plan; defect management and root cause analysis are integral pieces of the QA process
  • Responsible for the creation of the strategic Quality Assistance roadmap; executes quality strategy to achieve strategic and operational goals; collaborating with senior IT leadership to align with long-term initiatives
  • Working with department associates and leadership, implement a test automation strategy to optimize the delivery of efficient quality processes
  • Manage staff workload by understanding project portfolio, working with Service Delivery leadership and portfolio directors to forecast needed resources and usage

Strategic responsibilities include:

  • Champion continuous improvements in Quality process and tooling standards that comply with Enterprise Architectural patterns and Development Competency Center & DevOps standards and tooling
  • Drive collaborative development and implementation of a best-in-class test automation strategy; work with the DevCC, DevOps, and Ops Management teams to ensure developers and tooling are aligned to strategies that support functional and nonfunctional testing appropriate for pre- and post-release
  • Evaluate current standards for gaps and recommend changes required to support modern development techniques
  • Drive consistency and standardization via QA Portfolio Leads and Quality Engineers across business unit projects and products
  • Establish, implement, and maintain metrics to measure the performance and improvements in the department, QA individuals, project teams, development team, etc.; build consensus with teams and ensure development teams are held accountable
  • Collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to incorporate feedback into the QA process
  • Ensure testers understand agile principles, and are agile-ready
  • Develops and leverages partnerships (and relationships) with stakeholders
  • Foster an environment where team members work cooperatively across organizational boundaries with a high degree of accountability

Quality Assurance and Testing Execution responsibilities include:

  • Supervise the QA team members to follow quality assurance principles and use various and appropriate testing strategies throughout the software development cycle
  • Manage a team of ~25, including QA portfolio leads, software quality engineers, test automation engineers, manual testers, and performance/load testers
  • Advocates and drives for both process quality as well as product quality with all stakeholders of the product development teams
  • Oversee coordination of testing services through coordination with direct reports and review of team member work products
  • Ensure estimates for projects and other development efforts are appropriate
  • Ensure team properly reviews Business Requirements and Technical design documents, and identify other opportunities for applying quality process in a “shift left” manner
  • Coordinates with project managers, Service Delivery technical managers, and others to ensure QA team members are inserted into all efforts that will benefit from QA involvement
  • Escalation point for quality risks / issues and must be able to provide options to resolve / mitigate challenging situations
  • Ensure project/product quality are measured and share metrics with the teams, management, and other stakeholders
  • Manage team budget, ensuring flex staff are recoverable
  • Resource planning to ensure alignment with business priorities and performance expectations
  • When needed, drive the hiring process of associates, contractors, and/or MSP resources

Associate development responsibilities include:

  • Oversee HR related activities, including performance assessment and development plans
  • Manage a performance enhancement culture by actively coaching direct reports, providing regular mentoring, guidance, feedback, and associate development for wider roles and responsibilities to foster professional growth and development
  • Ensure ongoing training and support are available to the QA team in alignment with a continuous improvement strategy; ensure testing skill set is up to date and capable of supporting development efforts
  • Use organizational agility to remove inefficiencies and obstacles for organizational success

Required:

  • 10+ years of experience performing or overseeing software/system development life cycle and computer system validation
  • 5+ years experience in leading quality/testing teams and deployment of complex IT systems projects across multiple hardware and software platforms
  • 3+ years of experience directly managing people, including hiring, developing, motivating, and directing people as they work
