What does a Medical Coder do?

We, as medical coders, work for various healthcare facilities where we convert the information of patients to standardized codes. We use this information for the documentation for databases and healthcare insurance claims. We, the medical coders, assist medical practitioners to get reimbursement from healthcare insurance organizations. We assign the right universal medical alphanumeric code to explain the form of service patients will obtain in a healthcare facility or hospital.

Core tasks:

  • ensuring documents are correct grammar wise and are free from typographical errors
  • training and advising staff and physicians on medical coding
  • informing issues’ supervisor with computer program and equipment
  • ensuring adherence to medical coding guidelines and policies
