Mesa started in Farmington, New Mexico, at Four Corners Regional Airport. Larry Risley and his wife Janie realized the possibility for regular commercial aviation service between Farmington and Albuquerque when they founded our company. They took out a mortgage on their house and vehicles to buy a five-seat single-engine plane and began flying between the two cities in 1982. The Farmington airport is built on a real mesa, that's where the word Mesa comes from. Mesa Airlines has developed into a close-knit community with more planes and workers (pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, and corporate professionals), yet Air Shuttle is still the callsign pilots use to interact with air traffic control. It has signed the United Express contract, adding 20 new E-Jets and partnership with DHL to operate Boeing 737-400F cargo aircraft for the next 5 years.
