MSNBC is a New York-based news-based pay television cable station in the United States. The NBCUniversal News Group division of NBCUniversal owns it. It covers current events via NBC News coverage as well as its own reporting and political analysis. MSNBC and its website were launched in 1996 as a result of a collaboration between Microsoft and GE's NBC unit, hence the network's name. msnbc.com and MSNBC had independent business structures and news operations while sharing the same brand. In 2005, Microsoft sold its shares in the MSNBC channel, and in July 2012, it sold its investment in msnbc.com. The general news website was renamed NBCNews.com, while a new msnbc.com was launched as the cable channel's internet home, transmitting from 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan.
