Smt. Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister, determined that the country needed a Museum of Natural History to depict its flora, fauna, and mineral resources to provide an out-of-school facility for children's education and to encourage environmental awareness while contemplating new initiatives to be launched in 1972 on the occasion of India's 25th anniversary of independence. On the 5th of June 1978, the NMNH made their services to the public in a rented building in Mandi House, symbolically coinciding with World Environment Day. The NMNH has expanded its geographical range by developing Regional Museums of Natural History (RMNH) in many parts of the country, including the Southern Region (Mysore), Central Region (Bhopal), and Eastern Region (Agra) (Bhubaneswar). In the Western Region (Sawai Madhopur) and the North-Eastern Region, two more museums are being established (Gangtok).
