National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), is a government-owned, contractor-operated facility dedicated to the advancement of renewable electricity and energy productivity. The laboratory is presented to private entities to operate the lab on behalf of the federal government, and an omnipresent government-appointed team is annexed to the facility to provide other services like energy storage, systems integration, and sustainable transportation. The projects are wholly funded by Congress, with current researches underway for the development, testing, and deployment of photovoltaics. The facility began operations in 1977, as the Solar Energy Research Institute, gradually improving the institute’s position by expanding interests in other energy sectors and attaining global recognition with 61 R&D 100 Awards.
