New York Police Department (NYPD) is the primary law enforcement agency within the city of New York that was established on May 23, 1845 in Manhattan. Different services included in NYPD are Emergency Service Unit, air support, bomb squad, criminal intelligence, anti-organized crime, narcotics and many other services. Around 55,304 employees work in the NYPD. The first black officer of NYPD was appointed in 1911 whereas the first female officer of NYPD was appointed in 1918. The New York City Transit Police Department that existed from 1953 to 1955 is also a part of the NYPD now. The New York City Housing Authority Police Department has also merged with the NYPD.
