I don’t have much positive to say that’s for sure. Extremely toxic work environment. Rules for thee but not for me type of work place , bloated with middle managers trying to make their way up the ladder. Weak union backing.. Working without a contract for years on end. The only place you’ll ever work that you have to carry job insurance on yourself. Safety concerns fall on deaf ears.. But you get to watch trains..

Pros and Cons
Railroad Retirement.. if you can make it that long.
No life/work balance. Toxic atmosphere.

Started with Conrail in 1998 and was relocated when Norfolk Southern took over. Lived in Atlanta for 13 years. Came back up north to be closer to family. Relocated again in 2012 to find out after 4 years my pay was cut by 30,000 a year. Want to work closer to home and start a new career. It’s almost not worth driving 124 miles a day.

Pros and Cons
Railroad retirement
Commute, pay cut, work alone in a tower for 16 hours at times. Swing shift no home work balance

If you have a family its not worth it. I made $14 at my prior job and struggled less than i did at Norfolk Southern. They dont care about you at all. Ive set in a tied down train for 17 hours before they sent relief for us. Only to go to a hotel and sit for an additional 30 hours. If you dont claim your guarantee ypu dont get paid. Shouldnt be up to the employee to pay themselves should be up to the employer... If youre single with no kids have at it.

Pros and Cons
Retirement if you make it without being fired or laid off, safety
Gone from home extremely long. Pay

I worked at Norfolk Southern for 4yrs. I learn a great deal about accounting in the Transportation field. Norfolk was a great place to work. The down fall was having to walk in the rain and cold weather to and from the parking deck.

Pros and Cons
Free Lunch
Pay to much for parking
