North Carolina Central University (NCCU or NC Central) is a public, historically black university in Durham, North Carolina. It is a governmentally-supported liberal arts college. It was founded in 1909 by Dr. James E. Shepard as part of the Chautauqua movement, and it was funded by private donations from both Northern and Southern benefactors. It was renamed Durham State Normal School in 1923, when it got state financing for the first time. In the late 1930s and 1940s, it established graduate programs in the arts and sciences, as well as professional schools in law and library science. Scholarships are provided by the NCCU Foundation to the University and students, totaling $3.5 million in the last three years.
