When the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) initially opened in 1969, it pulled together 3 historically separate fields—art, history, and natural science—under one roof. The vision of the California Oakland Museum is to encourage people to develop a prosperous future for themselves and their neighborhoods. OMCA retains its close links with the city by providing a variety of educational and outreach services. Schools, academics, local audiences, and all guests are invited to take part in their events and programs and to explore their role in the history, current, and future of California. The Museum only employs people who are, allowed to operate in the United States. In certain cases, eligible persons may be sponsored for an appropriate work visa. The Museum is mandated to collect statistics on gender, age, veteran, and disability status for statistical purposes to conform with certain federal laws surrounding Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action provisions.
