The Attorney General serves as both the 'People's Lawyer' and the State's chief legal authority as head of the Department of Law. The Attorney General, sometimes known as the 'People's Lawyer,' protects the legal rights of New York's citizens, organizations, and natural resources. The Attorney General's duties as the state's chief legal counsel include not just advising the Executive branch of government, but also defending the state's acts and processes. The activities and investigations of the State Organized Crime Task Force and the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit are likewise under the Attorney General's jurisdiction. While the Attorney General is independent of the Governor, he or she may be asked by the Governor or a state agency to conduct specific criminal investigations and prosecutions.
