About Outpatient Coder

What does an Outpatient Coder do?

We, the outpatient coders, assign medical codes to treatments and procedures performed in the department of outpatient of a hospital or medical facility. Our duties include assessment of medical information accuracy, assignment of codes for procedures, update department of coding principles knowledge, and make sure charges are properly billed into the system. We examine patient medical records and charts and assign adequate codes to different treatments and services performed.

Core tasks:

  • designating medical codes to medical services and procedures
  • working in outpatient wards in specialty and general hospitals
  • using Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes for various medical procedures and services
  • processing invoices and submitting to billing patients or insurance companies
