Based in the US state of Washington, Pierce County has a population of more than 795,000 (2010 Census) giving it a runner-up ranking behind King County in terms of population. The largest city and the county seat of Pierce County is Tacoma city. Pierce County was formed out of Thurston County in December 1852 through legislation of Oregon Territory and named after the US president Franklin Pierce. Pierce County is home to the tallest mountain as well as a volcano of the Cascade Range: The Rainier Mountain.
