Job Description


The mission of the Estimator is to work collaboratively with Business Development and customers to develop price quotations for components and assemblies based on requests submitted by customers. The estimator completely owns and is responsible for managing workflow to meet on-time delivery of quoted packages to the customer.


  • Utilize ERP system to create cost estimates by synthesizing labor, material, outside processing, and production lead time estimates based on a variety of inputs.
  • Prepare estimates for prototype and production development projects which includes custom tooling, fixtures, prototype parts, and production parts.
  • Evaluate customer requirements by reviewing customer engineering documentation (prints, CAD models, other documented specifications), develop cost models for tooling, parts and assemblies including time, raw material, and outside services estimates as required to establish quoted costs.
  • Prepare costing report for presentation to management for quote review and approval.
  • Responsible for meeting quote on-time delivery and other quoting metrics. Ensures quotes are completed within customer expected timeframes.
  • Respond promptly to customer's communications.
  • Provide periodic updates to customer and management on the progress of complex quoting packages.
  • Work collaboratively with internal Subject Matter Experts (SME) to collect cost estimates.
  • Perform post-project analysis of quoted versus actual costs.
  • Maintain quoting system and records' integrity. Develops quoting methods and formulas with concurrence from management.
  • Develop and apply creative thinking of initial concepts to maximize the company's opportunities.
  • Look for ways to continuously improve the accuracy and speed of the quoting process.
  • Understand customer needs and the core business markets we serve.
  • Participate in required company meetings.
  • Maintain an organized work area (5S)
  • Support and comply with the company's Quality System, ISO.
  • Complete all other work duties as assigned.
  • Diploma in a machining related course from a technical or trade school or equivalent experience
  • 3-4 years of experience in a CNC machining or manufacturing environment
  • Training in Blueprint reading, GD&T, SPC and precision measurement
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the machining, welding & fabrication industries, and practices
  • Understands the manufacturing capability and capacity of the organization.
  • Understands tooling and manufacturing processes that relate to the manufacturing Industry
  • Has advanced verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and team building skills to create effective working relationships with suppliers, customers, and co-workers
  • Ability to operate 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems
  • Ability to understand common commercial terms and conditions, including quotation terms
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple tasks when needed
  • Ability to follow through on commitments and holds team members accountable
  • Ability to consistently achieve short and long-term business results
  • Possess a strong attention to detail
  • Good communication skills - written and verbal

  • Collect historical cost data to estimate costs for current or future products.
  • Consult with clients, vendors, personnel in other departments, or construction foremen to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
  • Prepare estimates used by management for purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work.
  • Analyze blueprints and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.
  • Confer with engineers, architects, owners, contractors, and subcontractors on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
  • Assess cost effectiveness of products, projects or services, tracking actual costs relative to bids as the project develops.
  • Prepare estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors.
  • Set up cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain tendering process, and conduct negotiations.
  • Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors.
  • Review material and labor requirements to decide whether it is more cost-effective to produce or purchase components.
  • Conduct special studies to develop and establish standard hour and related cost data or to effect cost reduction.
  • Prepare cost and expenditure statements and other necessary documentation at regular intervals for the duration of the project.
  • Visit site and record information about access, drainage and topography, and availability of services such as water and electricity.
