What does a Referral Clerk do?

As Referral Clerks, we make patient care referrals to outside agencies according to hospital policies, procedures, and responsibilities. We document all referrals and forward referral documents to the appropriate department. We answer patient inquiries and takes a message for follow-up.

Core tasks:

  • following up the referrals promptly to assure that appointments are made for appropriate care
  • assisting providers in completing all medical documentation required to provide referral services following the specific procedure
  • participating in staff meetings as instructed
  • maintaining confidentiality within the workplace
