The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decisionmakers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.


The Research Associate serves as primary researcher on substantive projects, both for in-house assignments and contributor information requests. Makes contributions to the research agenda of the Southeast Asia Program s senior scholars through writing, research, data/trend analysis, and project development. In addition, the Research Associate assists in ensuring the successful coordination of all aspects of the Program, including program development, outreach efforts, and event planning and coordination.

The Southeast Asia Program is recruiting a Research Associate who is highly motivated, professional, and has a very strong interest and understanding of the political economy of Southeast Asian nations. An ideal candidate will have:

1) Fieldwork experience in Southeast Asia and the ability to work comfortably and fluently with sources including regional government documents, academic articles and local databases; 2) Experience collecting and analyzing quantitative data on Southeast Asian economies; 3) Knowledge and interest in economic policy, particularly fluency on trade, investment, and infrastructure policy;4) Strong written and oral communication skills; the ability to write quickly and independently;5) Demonstrated interest in how research speaks to public policy issues;6) Experience managing project timelines and budgets.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

Provides research support by: Conducting and managing research on a range of topics as directed by Program experts, including Southeast Asian economic and political issues, for example by:o Monitoring economic and political trends and developments in Southeast Asia on a continuous basis;o Preparing briefings and analysis for Southeast Asia Program senior staff on economic and political trends in Southeast Asia;o Drawing upon knowledge of regional economies and politics to assist in research; Researching, drafting, and authoring publications, including large reports; Representing the Program by participating in meetings, activities, and through synergistic efforts within CSIS and externally; Contributing to the grant proposal process to secure support and funding for new project initiatives by initial concept formulation, primary research, and document drafting.

Supports Program management and development: Assists the Director and Deputy Director with the preparation of internal reports and program publications; Assists the Director and Deputy Director to track Program expenditures and prepare for internal budget meetings. Provides outreach support to program stakeholders.

B. A./B. S. required from an accredited U. S. institution or equivalent from a non-U. S. institution. 2-3 years of experience in policy analysis and/or an M. A. in related field preferred required for consideration as a Research Associate. Must be computer literate, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web-based research tools. Knowledge of statistical software packages (Stata, R, etc.) is a plus. Must possess excellent people skills. Strong knowledge of Southeast Asian economic and political issues. Working fluency in one or more regional language a plus. Ability to write invitations, correspondence, etc. Must have strong organizational skills, as well as the ability to manage competing priorities. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team. Must possess strong communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups, media, domestic and foreign governmental entities, corporations, and the general public.
