ICF is seeking a junior to mid-level Scientific Information Analyst (SIA) with 2 6 years of experience working directly with biomedical and behavioral scientific information about various disease categories, illnesses, and health conditions. This position is located within NIH s Office of the Director and supports the Research Condition and Disease Categorization program (RCDC). RCDC provides consistent and transparent reporting to the public on NIH-funded research related to various disease and research areasusing thesaurus-based Natural Language Processing and Text Mining & Analysis tools, data visualization, and machine learning solutions. The candidate will be responsible for researching areas of new and emerging science and analyzing NIH grants and agreements using text mining software to identify projects relevant to specific research areas.

This position involves detailed work with NIH grant proposals, documentation and data management, as well as collaboration with team members and scientific experts across all of NIH s Institutes and Centers (IC). The SIA creates and facilitates Subject Matter Experts in reaching trans-NIH agreements on category parameters. Additionally, s/he develops and presents research category funding reports and responds to special data requests.

The successful candidate should be able to work independently to analyze scientific (biomedical, allied health sciences) research project materials, lead a presentation of technical information to Subject Matter Experts, interpret and implement technical/scientific information applicably, learn new topics quickly, and have outstanding attention to detail. The candidate should also enjoy reading and analyzing biomedical research. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical assistance to support accurate reporting of categorized research data
  • Analyze technical, scientific, and health-related information using natural language processing, data visualization, machine learning, and thesaurus editing tools.
  • Maintain the accuracy of existing research category definitions, and work with experts in the field to present and develop new biomedical categories utilizing the indexing of research grant text.
  • Provide technical presentations and demonstrations of data analyses and conclusions.
  • Develop and present reports on funding by research category, and respond to special data requests.
  • Suggest improvements to text mining performance and processes using critical thinking and evidence-based research (e. g., suggestions for improvements to the thesaurus, concept normalization, or natural language processing).

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological, biomedical, or allied health sciences.
  • 2-6 years of experience in biological, biomedical, or allied health sciences.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and discuss technical biomedical literature.
  • Experience facilitating scientific meetings in a "lead" capacity for groups of various sizes and scientific expertise.
  • Proficiency analyzing data using Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service and ability work in a collaborative environment.
  • Highly organized, deadline driven, and able to multi-task.
  • Requires US Citizen or US Person (Green Card Holder) with the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.

Preferred Skills:

  • Working knowledge of scientific thesaurus or other structured vocabularies and text mining tools and software.
  • Demonstrated experience in immunology and/or genetics.
  • Desire to continuously grow and learn

TASKS

  • Test, maintain, and monitor computer programs and systems, including coordinating the installation of computer programs and systems.
  • Troubleshoot program and system malfunctions to restore normal functioning.
  • Expand or modify system to serve new purposes or improve work flow.
  • Use the computer in the analysis and solution of business problems, such as development of integrated production and inventory control and cost analysis systems.
