Headquartered in Durham, North Carolina, Self Help Credit Union is an organization was founded in 1980 with a belief that ownership was the most feasible way for families to build wealth as well as financial security. This was important for societies to create a strong and vibrant community, and the organization's experience over the past four decades has reinforced that belief. When it started off, the organization assisted the employees in the rural NC region hailing from the worker-owned cooperatives to gain ownership of the local mills that were being shut down. For several years, the workers were stopped from pursuing ownership of the mills because they couldn’t find any conventional financing scheme. Responding to that problem, Self Help Credit Union was established as a non-profit loan fund. The union’s first capital was just $77 that was raised a bake sale that was organized by a baker. Other early investors also included Catholic Women’s religious orders.
