The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is an individual membership professional organization representing more than 97,000 member physical therapists (PTs), physical therapist assistants (PTAs), and students of physical therapy. APTA seeks to improve the health and quality of life of individuals in society by advancing physical therapist practice, education, and research, and by increasing the awareness and understanding of physical therapy's role in the nation's health care system.

This position assists in the strategic direction of the State Government Affairs team on efforts to implement the Association’s public policy priorities.  Acts as representative of the Association in member relations, strategic alliances, and policy development initiatives to advance physical therapy.

·       Advocates for effective policies in conjunction with state chapters, sections, strategic organization, and contract lobbyists that allow PTs to practice to full extent of licensure, education, scope of practice, and clinical experience.

·       Identifies and analyzes state legislation, laws, and regulations affecting physical therapy

·       Develops materials to support component advocacy related to state legislation and regulations and writes draft legislation, talking points, testimony, white papers, letters, and other materials for chapters.

·       Organizes, plans and implements annual APTA State Government Affairs Forum for component leaders

·       Responds to member inquiries related to licensure, state legislation, and policy issues.

·       Assists chapters in lobbying efforts directed at branches of state governments.

·       Assists chapter grassroots efforts and advocacy events aimed at state branches of government including writing and distributing of state legislative action alerts via email to chapter members.

·       Works with chapters to plan and execute state lobby days at state capitols, as well as events aimed at educating members about state legislative advocacy.


·       4+ years’ experience with state legislative or regulatory issues or activities 

·       Undergraduate degree or equivalent related experience

·       Excellent interpersonal skills

·       Excellent organizational and communication skills

·       Strong computer/database experience required

·       Excellent public speaking ability

·       Strong professional writing skills
