The northeasternmost state of the USA, Maine entered the United States Union as the 23rd State on March 15, 1820. Maine has the city of Augusta as its capital, located in Kennebec County, one of 16 counties that form up the state. The state is governed by The Department of Administrative and Financial Services, which is a proactive, innovative service organization of the state government, currently headed by the Governor, Janet Mills. It consists of 9 bureaus, in addition to numerous boards and commissions, all present to coordinate the financial planning, programming activities of state agencies, and to oversee the aspects of human resources, information technology services, and public improvements. The department is made up of 1200 employees, sectioned and trained by the federal government, to provide quality services, leadership, accountability, and perform in a manner warranting the highest level of public confidence, secured by the state's extensive benefits plan and financial policies.
