The Legal Assistance Society is a New York City-based non-profit legal aid organization. It is the oldest and largest supplier of legal assistance in the United States, having been founded in 1876. Its lawyers assist clients in criminal and civil disputes, both individually and as part of class actions. The organization is supported by a mix of government funds and private donations. It can deal with a lot of different situations. Yearly, it handles over 200,000 indigent criminal cases, acts as an attorney for over 30,000 children, and represents families, individuals, and community groups in over 30,000 instances. Legal Aid also represents thousands of welfare clients, foster children, homeless families, the elderly poor, Rikers Island convicts, and other convicts in important class action lawsuits.
