The UTRGV is a public research university with various campuses all over the Rio Grande Valley region of Texas and also a member of the University of Texas System. The University was formed by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public research university of the 21st century in Texas. These transformative programs provided the opportunity to increase educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new medical school. The UTRGV enrolled more than 29000 students in the 2019 fall, making the public research university the 9th largest University in Texas. The University is one of the most prominent universities in the United States to have a majority of the Hispanic student population.
