JOB GOAL

Under direct supervision, responsible for performing routine preventative maintenance on vehicular equipment including gasoline and diesel-driven vehicles to maintain a safe economical fleet.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Performs routine, preventive maintenance, and lesser skilled repair work on vehicular equipment, including but not limited to, lubrication and oil changes, brake repairs, tire replacement, wheel balancing, hose replacements, wheel bearings, electrical units, batteries, and maintaining transmissions.
  2. Performs limited troubleshooting and diagnostics of electrical and mechanical problems.
  3. Reports unsafe or hazardous mechanical conditions that exist on any vehicle or equipment.
  4. Assists with scheduled vehicle inspections.
  5. Maintains all district vehicles with adequate fuel.
  6. Maintains all district vehicles in good condition by washing and cleaning vehicles' interior and exterior.
  7. Maintains garage area and grounds in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  8. Cares for all district vehicles by disinfecting interior of buses thoroughly with approved cleaning agents.
  9. Assists with required paperwork and maintains appropriate records in compliance with state guidelines.
  10. Performs safety inspections on vehicles and equipment; performs routine repair work; reports safety and other priority repair work to the supervisor.
  11. Drives transportation service trucks to pick up and deliver automotive parts and supplies.
  12. Loads and unloads recapped and used tires for inventory purposes.
  13. Assists in the location and diagnosis of mechanical defects in vehicles.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge, Skills & abilities
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical repair, service, fueling, and cleaning vehicles
  • Knowledge of and ability to use tools, materials and methods used in the maintenance, adjustment, servicing, and repair of automotive equipment
  • Ability to maintain accurate records using established record keeping principles and procedures
  • Ability to follow safe work practices
  • Ability to learn and apply rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of the district's passenger transport vehicles
  • Ability to learn and assist in performing all tasks related in body repair, re-finishing, and the mounting and balancing of school bus tires
  • Skilled in the care for tools and equipment used in vehicle maintenance
  • Ability and willingness to work under extreme weather conditions and hazardous traffic situations
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Skilled in the operation of large service vehicles
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to understand and apply basic math skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email and word processing
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, manage, and carry out duties efficiently and within established timeframes
Education, Training & Experience
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) from an accredited institution
  • One year experience in automotive setting
OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position
Certificates, Licenses & Registrations
  • Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with a Passenger Endorsement 'P' or able to attain within 6 months of employment
Preferred qualifications
  • Vocational degree or certification in the field of automotive, or related field
  • Two years of experience in automotive setting or fleet maintenance
