While I was a high school undergraduate, I received a wonderful opportunity with a co-worker of my family to employ me as a research assistant at the University of Houston. We focused on the research of the cornea to provide insight to further develop information necessary for surgery in the future. My part was 3-D reconstruction and analysis of electron microscopic images of cornea tissue. The team of researchers was very friendly and highly motivated to learn more about the mysteries of the cornea itself, and it was a joy to see day by day. Once the project was complete, we published the findings using the images I reconstructed of Fibrillin structures within the cornea I was segmenting. I can still remember the pride I had when the team could make good use of my work.

Pros and Cons
Friendly coworkers, independent critical thinking, cooperative motivated team
Complicated parking, travel time due to traffic

Staff are always overlooked when it comes to taking care of UH employees. Students 1st and then Faculty and then maybe staff get the end of it...... Not much room for growth - this institution has a "you get in with ppl that know you" as opposed to getting someone that fully comprehends the position. No room for growth and have a policy if you owe a debt for taking classes or anything then no merit/raise/promotion for you even if you've been working for them 10+ years. Most faculty could care less about staff that service them.......bunch of nepotism and low staff morale - but they do give staff an annual staff retreat serving the same food almost every year......bbq/hot dogs or meal w/ limited options.....but enjoyed most of the student events.....

Pros and Cons
Central located - different cultures - diverse
Low Salary grades - hard to get promotions/raises - no professional growth - low staff morale - etc.

Inept manager, totally lacking knowledge iof the web, more concerned about covering their ass than getting a project done right. Lots of politics and endless meetings plus no long term planning. If like bureaucracy it might be the place for you

Pros and Cons
Nice employees
Poor management from the very top down
