Headquartered in Suitland, the U.S. Census Bureau operates under the US Code Title 13 and 26. Census Bureau was established with a mission to operate as the country’s leading provider of quality data for its people and economy. In fact, the company works for rendering current facts and figures about America’s people, places, and economy. The major goal of the federal government’s largest statistical agency Census Bureau is to offer the best mix of timeliness, relevancy, quality, and cost for the data collected and services provided wherein Federal law protects the confidentiality of all the information collected by the Census Bureau. The first Census was performed in 1790 and thereafter taken forward in every 10 years. In 1840, the Census Act authorized the establishment of a centralized Census Office whereas in 1902, the Census Office became a permanent organisation and renamed as the Bureau of the Census.
