The United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is the public health governmental agency in charge of assuring that the commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products in the United States is safe, healthy, and properly labeled and packed. More than 7,800 FSIS inspectors are assigned to about 6,200 federal slaughterhouses, food processing and import establishments. It inspects tens of billions of pounds of meat and poultry, as well as billions of pounds of egg products. Inspectors undertake antemortem and postmortem exams at slaughterhouses to prevent ill animals from being slaughtered. FSIS, which was founded on March 14, 1977, is headquartered in the Jamie L. Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Ave SW, Washington, D.C., and employs 10,000 people.
