What does a Wildland Firefighter do?

As Wildland Firefighters, we are focused on conserving and protecting forest resources including wildlife and the ecosystem of the forest as a whole. We are highly trained wildland firefighters who enjoy a dynamic work environment, become experts in the field of wildland fire suppression, prevention, and become part of a unique, all-hazard response agency. We are willing and capable of performing strenuous outdoor work safely and productively to maximize the safety of numerous species habituated in forests. Additionally, we are competent in understanding and following the chain of command, and are demonstratively the most responsible citizens. We work for the greater good of wildlife species.

Core tasks:

  • under close supervision receive training and instruction in fire control duties using heavy equipment
  • assist with maintaining buildings, grounds, and equipment
  • participate in forestry-related services and programs such as reforestation, community and school activities
  • control and extinguishes fires using manual and power equipment
  • ensure proper operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment
  • inspect the property to ensure compliance with laws, codes, and regulations
  • operate fire engines and hose lays
