The Pathology Department is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Specialist who will serve as a senior member of the laboratory staff and assists the laboratory supervisor in the daily administration of lab functions. The candidate must have a solid foundation in Immunology and Genetics as it applies to organ transplantation. This advanced scientific knowledge will be applied to trouble-shooting technical assays, data analysis/review, assay development and other clinical activities of the laboratory as delegated by the laboratory supervisor and managers. Additionally, this deeper understanding of transplantation science allows for more independent research activities by these individuals.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director/Manager/Supervisor.
Participate in deceased donor on-call responsibilities.
Assist in troubleshooting of assays or analysis tools
Assist supervisor in the evaluation of new techniques and protocols.
Participate in procedure and protocol manual review.
Communicate with transplant program stakeholders to help evaluate potential donors
Oversee data entry and integrity in outside databases for organizations like National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
Determine cases/results that need further review by supervisor/manager/director.
Collate results from multiple high complexity assays and provide results to clinicians.
Provide decision support to other members of the laboratory.
Perform high complexity tests.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
This position requires certification and advanced understanding of laboratory operations.
Working under minimal supervision, performs a variety of both routine and complex clinical laboratory data analysis in accordance with established standards and procedures.
The primary duties and responsibilities of the job require an advanced foundation in Immunology and Genetics as it applies to organ transplantation.
Uses understanding of transplantation science to perform independent assignments.
Advanced scientific knowledge will be applied to trouble-shooting technical assays, the day-to-day oversight of clinical data interpretation of the laboratory as delegated by the faculty or supervisor/manager.
Attention to defined lab procedures and safe manipulation of lab equipment at all times. These require a professional level of knowledge to properly execute and analyze results, especially where results are abnormal or atypical.
Trains and instructs other testing personnel on lab procedures.
Teaches residents/fellows rotating through the lab and performs Quality Control review.
Performs validation of new methods and/or new tests, writes final draft of patient report for Director or signs out reports if delegated by the Director.

Work Environment /While performing the duties of this job
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) up to 70% of the time.
Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus.
The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results.
Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope).
Laboratory Environment
Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed.
Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.
Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area.
Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.
Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, radiation protocols, and other bio-hazardous materials.
Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus (specify).
May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes or Formalin cubes).
In some areas work space is limited.
Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must ensure compliance with Johns Hopkins Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.
On –Call & Pager assigned duties, required.
Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift.
Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. (Overtime possible when authorized/needed to meet business and patient needs).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Five year's experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred advanced degree, Masters or PhD in related science.
Specialized Certification such as CHS, MLT, MLS, Lean Six Sigma Green/Yellow/Black belt or similar.
