Position Summary:
The Controller’s position assists and oversees the everyday activities of the Accounting Department. He/she would direct and ensure the timely and accurate completion of all tasks performed by accounting personnel, as well as monitor the overall financial aspects of the company.
Essential Functions:
- Compiles and analyzes financial transactions and similar information in order to prepare accounting entries.
- Prepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending financial targets.
- Prepares internal reports to send to ownership by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends. Reports the company’s financial condition, operations, contingencies, and opportunities accurately and completely.
- Oversees all matters related to accounting including the month-end close process and preparation of all monthly financial reporting.
- Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting internal audits and providing information to external auditors. This position will act as the point of contact regarding all external audits. (Annual audits, 401k and Benefit Plan audits, etc).
- Assists with the installation, modifications, documentations, and coordination of the accounting software system.
- Oversees and works closely with the assistant controller, accounts receivable manager and staff accountant.
- Ensures the company’s profitability, liquidity, and solvency; assuring the company earns the maximum return on assets and incurs minimum expenses on borrowed capital.
- Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
- Collects all appropriate data in order to prepare federal, state, and local tax returns, including state apportionment reports.
- Manage and oversea the creation and set up of a charitable foundation for the company.
- Manages and compiles data for yearly CPA audit and works with CPA firm on yearly tax returns and filings.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with senior executives and ownership to identify their needs and seek full range of business solutions.
- Manage all processes for financial forecasts and monthly projections.
- Assists with creation of all incentive and bonus plans.
- Act as the point of contact for the company’s annual insurance renewals.
- Act as the point of contact for all external companies seeking information regarding the company’s financial stability and solvency as well as sending out quarterly reports. (Bank, Insurance, Surety)
- Contributes to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks and special projects as needed and ensures excellent communication between all departments throughout the Tomko facilities.
- Oversees and assists with the management of ownership Trusts and Estates.
- Responsible for creating amortization schedules for all external and internal loans.
- Responsible for collecting data in order to create and maintain the company’s utilization schedule for all heavy equipment and tractor trailers.
- Assists ownership and other departments regarding new equipment purchases by seeking out the terms of the loans and providing the appropriate capital.
Qualifications:
- CPA License required.
- Excellent knowledge of construction industry required.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business finance required, as well as proven management experience
- At least seven years of progressive experience in construction related accounting
- Excellent knowledge of the corporate tax codes.
- Excellent organizational skills in order to coordinate tasks within the accounting department and ownership
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Excellent knowledge of GAAP
- High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and result orientated.
- Ability to schedule, prioritize, and assign all accounting work assignments
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of diverse individuals
- Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
- Ability to enforce and abide by all Tomko policies and procedures
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assists ownership with miscellaneous functions related to Tomko subsidiaries
- Minimal travel to Tomko office in Baltimore MD may be necessary
- Attend marketing and other company sponsored events when necessary
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position overseas the Assistant Controller, Staff Accountant and AR Manager.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
Physical Effort:
Light physical effort, which may require handling of average-weight objects up to 15 pounds and some standing and walking.
Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:30pm. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
