FIU College Reach Out Program - Summer Associates FLCC

The goal of the FIU -Pre-College MMC is to be able to attract college students from similar background as our students to serve as mentors and role models who will help us provide a top quality summer enrichment program to our middle and high school students. Summer Associates will provide the hands-on direct services needed in order to help students develop academically and socially, preventing summer learning loss in our pre-collegiate students.

Member Duties : Summer Associate VISTAs will: serve as counselors to a given group of students, provide tutoring and counseling to students in need, ensure a safe learning environment for summer program participants, provide mentoring and serve as role models to participants, help with the daily operation of their respective summer program, and represent the Program they serve in a professional manner.

    I went through Americorps because I was a student in high school and I enrolled in a program called Youthbuild Dayton which basically is like a program that helps you graduate and helps you get a trade such as healthcare and construction. Youthbuilds goal is to pretty much save us and they also partnership with Americorps. We would do tasks such as Going to the food bank and packing up food, other activities like around the fall time we carved pumpkins for a church, we went to the community blood center and gave them a presentation about why it’s good to draw blood or be a blood donor

    they actually care about you succeeding
    they are hard on you but it’s all worth it

    This was an amazing experience for me, I really enjoyed the support of my regional team and the support from my site supervisors.. I was a part of something bigger than money making and more impactful than other teen programs in the area.

    I loved working with the homeless and near homeless population. Being able to get them emergency assistance to avoid a crisis meant a lot to me. The recognition didn’t stop as members were very grateful for the services that I provided.

    Absolutely loved Americorps Vista it was such an adventure and Awakening to new beginning your leader was always supportive and there when you needed them I was very blessed to be able to spend a year serving Americorps Vista I've taken the lessons I've learned everywhere with me in my lif
