Overview

As a member of the Clinical Research Center (CRC) team, the Laboratory and Safety Assistant will be responsible for supporting the collection, processing, cataloging, and storage of multiple specimens in accordance with clinical research protocols and procedures. Duties will include oversight, general maintenance, and quality control of laboratory equipment, as well as inventory, ordering and maintenance of Clinical Research Center supplies.

Hours are 7:00 am-3:30 pm Monday-Friday.

Responsibilities

Clinical Research Center (CRC)

  • Provide general support for laboratory procedures related to clinical research protocols including sorting, labeling, storing and/or shipment of multiple specimens.
  • Set up and maintain study specific research specimen databases, such as Freezerworks.
  • Assist study personnel and CRC staff in compiling study specific paperwork, labeling preparation for specimen collection, and sample coding for Freezerworks storage including retrieval of bio specimens from long-term cold storage.
  • Attend CRC study start-up meetings to become familiar with protocols, protocol-specific specimen processing procedures and maintains/updates CRC Processing Manual.
  • Assist study staff and/or perform point of care testing.
  • Process and prepare specimens and requisitions for samples going to both the clinic laboratory and outside reference laboratories.
  • Perform quality control measures on CRC equipment and storage units.
  • Oversees the general maintenance of equipment and processing areas.
  • Coordinate the ordering and maintain the inventory of laboratory and patient care supplies and stocks. Assure appropriate supply and storage of laboratory items (special preservatives, etc.), rotate stock supplies to ensure that all are used before their expiration dates, and that expired supplies/materials are not used and disposed of properly.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Safety Office

  • Provide general support to the Safety Office, including but not limited to: filing, record keeping, ordering of supplies to maintain safety systems, and general maintenance of safety equipment.
  • Become familiar with OSHA, NIH, COMS, and MaRCP regulations - for safe handling of hazardous materials.
  • Assist the Safety Officer with maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and requirements for the institution.
  • Assist the Safety Officer with waste management tasks for chemical, radiological, and biological materials.
  • Assist with the support of safety compliance and waste management in the various clinical settings (Adult Diabetes, Pediatrics, Beetham Eye Institute (BEI), and the CRC).
  • Assist and support Joslin’s fire safety program.
  • Assist with incident/injury investigations and ergonomic assessments.
  • Function and participate in monthly Safety Committee meetings.
  • Function and participate in emergency response to hazardous material spills.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications
    • Associate’s degree or equivalent relevant experience; Bachelor’s degree preferred
    • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience – with routine clinical and laboratory processing procedures. Biomedical research environment preferred.
    • Intermediate computer skills, includes knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
    • Strong communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, and organizational skills
    • Self-motivated and possess good judgment in decision making
    • Ability to work independently and with departments throughout Joslin
    • Maintain confidentially (internally and externally), and with excellent judgment.
    • Strong attention to detail; ability to track, organize, prioritize, and/or escalate tasks accordingly

    • Use appropriate safety (lifting, handling, etc.) techniques, especially for hazardous -chemical, biological, and radiological- materials.
    • Physical requirements include the ability to

      bend, squat, reach, lift and move boxes as heavy as <50 lbs.
    • Follow OSHA, NIH, COMS, and MaRCP regulations
    • Knowledge and practice of Universal Precautions and good laboratory practice.
    • Knowledge and practice of safety equipment and measures.
