GENERAL OVERVIEW:

The clinical laboratory assistant performs a variety of clerical and technical duties under general supervision. May performs pre-analytic procedures on material derived from the human body which provides information for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of a disease or assessment of a human medical condition.

Responsibilities includes assembling patient test kits and fulfill requests from testing location for distribution. Test kit assembly requires affixing labels onto clean specimen bags and adding instructions and specimen collection supplies into each bag. Assembled kits are organized according to kits types and testing locations.

Answer laboratory telephones. Answer inquiries for patient test results, turnaround time for test results, and other laboratory information. Screen calls, take messages, route calls, and page requested parties as appropriate.

Checks requisitions for accuracy and completeness of lab orders. Sorts, alphabetizes, and files/scans lab requisitions.

May also include receipt, verification, processing specimens as well triaging specimens for additional testing in other laboratories. Performs computer data entry of patient and specimen information.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assemble patient test kits and fulfill requests from testing location for distribution.
  • Receives, verifies the identity and accessions Microbiology specimens. Maintains requisitions for easy retrieval
  • Enter patient, test, and compliance information into computer.
  • Generates barcode labels; labels specimens/requisitions.
  • Prepares specimens for testing: centrifuges and decants specimens as needed, generates worklist, ensures specimens are setup in correct order by verifying two patient identifiers
  • Prepares analyzer(s) for testing by performing basic maintenance and preparing quality control, reagents according to procedure
  • Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures.
  • Successfully participates in annual Health and Safety Training and Compliance activities.
  • Successfully participates in safety education and competency assessment activities.
  • Adheres to proper handling of specimens.
  • Triages all specimens for additional testing in other laboratories.
  • Adheres to procedure for the "Handling of Unacceptable Specimens" as established by laboratory administration.
  • Follows standard precaution and wears PPE to perform tasks as indicated.
  • Maintains safe working environment.
  • Acts as a resource to and assists in the training of others working in the laboratory
  • Maintains laboratory inventory.
  • Answers the phone as needed: provides information and performs add-ons as requested.
  • Refers problems and unusual requests to appropriate personnel
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with individuals in the lab and hospital in person and by telephone
  • Ability to multitask and work accurately under stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands.
  • Must possess fundamental knowledge of basic laboratory operations
  • Attentive to detail and precise in performing technical tasks
  • Neat and orderly work habits.
  • Careful attention to detail on laboratory requisitions.
  • Possess manual dexterity and visual accuracy.
  • Accurate computer skills including MS Office.
  • Demonstrates excellent dependability/reliability, accuracy, prioritization, problem solving, customer service and teamwork.
  • Understanding of LIS and compliance issues.
  • Appropriate level of professionalism.
  • Compliance with HIPPA requirements.
  • Understand regulatory requirements necessary to maintain laboratory readiness in preparation for JCAHO audits.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficiently to communicate with patients, laboratory staff and providers.


Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Medical Terminology. Associate degree in science preferred.

Minimum of 1- 2years in a support role is preferred.
