JOB DESCRIPTION.

Second Baptist School is currently seeking a PART-TIME COLLEGE COUNSELOR for the 2024-2025 school year.
  • Position Title: College Counselor
  • Reports To: Director of College Guidance
  • Work Calendar: 20 Hours Per Week/Eleven Month
JOB SUMMARY.

The college counselor is a part-time position with a shared responsibility for guiding upper school students and families through the transition to post-secondary education. The college counselor works under the direction of the director of college guidance and is an active and engaged team member contributing to the fulfillment of duties in the office of College Guidance.

RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES.

Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:
  • Meet with parents to discuss and provide information about their student's college admissions process.
  • Assist with the fall application process as students finalize their college lists and submit applications.
  • Work closely with parents, students, and the Athletic Department to successfully navigate the NCAA Eligibility Center.
  • Serve as the liaison between the Athletic Department and College Guidance.
  • Serve as the lead for 9th and 10th grade students and parents in the College Guidance process.
  • Assist 9th and 10th grade students with the use of the online database Naviance.
  • Assist with the organization and management of SBS College Day held on campus each fall semester.
  • Responsible for the organization, planning, and execution of and serve as a chaperone on the SBS Interim Term Texas College Tour taken during the spring semester.
  • Communicate with the alumni relations coordinator to visit with SBS alumni at Texas colleges and universities.
  • As needed, assist the upper school counselor with 4-year plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Possess a strong Christian testimony and a calling to serve as a positive Christian role model to our students.
  • Have a strong desire to be part of the upper school leadership team at Second Baptist School, a Christian college-preparatory school, which is a ministry of Second Baptist Church.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, multitasking and organizational skills.
  • Consistently desire to have a growth mindset that embodies the school's pursuit of excellence.
  • Possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Desire to partner with parents in the raising of their students.
CANDIDATE SUMMARY.

We seek the following in qualified candidates:
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; a master's degree is preferred.
  • Have at least three years of experience in college counseling, college admissions or high school counseling.
  • A strong Christian testimony and a calling to serve as a positive Christian role model to our students.
  • A heart to provide exceptional customer service to all members of the community.
  • A desire to lead and support all school-wide initiatives.
  • A responsible steward of the school's resources and a personal commitment to support the school's fundraising efforts as able.
  • A strong work ethic.

Advanced Placement training/experience, independent school teaching, and prior knowledge of Second Baptist Church and School are all considered a plus.

About the College Counselor role

Counselors College Counselor

As College Counselors, we are responsible for ensuring a smooth transition of students from school to college. We assist school students in the completion of required documents for college entrance. We also guide students to enhance their engagement in the completion of school studies. Some of us support students to develop skills. Developing strong relations with community colleges, universities, and trade schools is also part of our responsibility. We organize and manage information sessions for school students and their families. Working as College Counselors, we collaborate with office staff to track student's progress in their final year of school. Finally, we assist students in their college admission process and testing.
