Job Description

Are YOU the next Executive to lead the State of Alaska's Division of Risk Management?

The State of Alaska, Department of Administration, is seeking its Director for the Division of Risk Management.

What you will be doing:
As the Director of the Division of Risk Management, you will:

  • Lead a dedicated team and drive continual improvement of the State of Alaska's Risk Management Program (RMP).
  • Collaborate with the Office of the Attorney General on litigated claims.
  • Participate in legislation process that involves the Risk Management Program.
  • Direct the successful day-to-day operations of the RMP; oversee the assignment and investigation of all liability claims in the areas of workers' compensation, automotive and general, marine, aviation, and state property.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in the interpretation and application of the RMP framework and actively coach colleagues and advise State leadership on risk management performance and practices.
  • Set goals, objective, and KPIs for the State's RMP.
  • Identify and assess risks that could impact the State and develop risk management strategies.
  • Determine suitable insurance coverages for the State.
  • Negotiate, purchase, renew, revise, and cancel policy coverages and service contracts.
  • Prepare reports, as needed.

The work location:
This leadership position may be located in Anchorage or Juneau, Alaska.

In Anchorage, the Director will work at the Atwood building in the city's downtown district, the heart of restaurants, shops, and a block from the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and Anchorage Museum.

In Juneau, the Director will work at the division's office in the State Office Building in the historic, beautiful state capital. Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau with views of the Gastineau Channel where humpback whales swim in the summer.

Who we are looking for:

An executive leader who possesses the following core competencies:
  • Risk Management: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools used for risk assessment and mitigation, including assessment of failures and their consequences.
  • Insurance: Knowledge of various types of insurance, insurance regulations, claims processing, examination, adjudication, or adjustment.
  • Performance Management: Knowledge of performance management concepts, principles, and practices related to planning, monitoring, rating, and rewarding employee performance.
  • Human Capital Management: Builds and manages workforce based on organizational goals, budget considerations, and staffing needs. Ensures that employees are appropriately recruited, selected, appraised, and rewarded; takes action to address performance problems. Manages a multi-sector workforce and a variety of work situations.
  • Financial Management: Prepares, justifies, and/or administers the budget for program areas; plans, administers, and monitors expenditures to ensure cost-effective support of programs and policies; assesses financial condition of an organization.
Professional certification such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Professional Risk Manager (PRM), or RIMS-CRMP desired but not required. If you do not hold a certification, don't let that stop you from applying.

Minimum Qualifications
Positions in this job class are in the Partially Exempt Service under AS 39.25.120(c)(2).
