An entry level wage of $17.60. Then as you advance through the Transportation Education Program (TEP) levels you will receive wage increases.

Health Insurance - Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):
- 3 medical plan options. Choose a Traditional or High Deductible Health Plan. (There is an Opt-Out Cash Benefit option for those that have other medial insurance coverage)

Retirement - Utah Retirement Systems (URS):
- Employees hired on or after than 7/1/2011 and have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System. Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
- Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in Tier I Public Employees System.
  - Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
  - Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
- Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in Tier I Public Employees System.
Paid Time Off - Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick). Annual leave increases with years of service, sick leave doe not. There are also 11 paid holidays.

The Position
The Utah Department of Transportation is looking for a hard working, hands-on individual to fill a Transportation Technician II position in Region Three's, Specialty Crew.

This is a very important position that is part of a team that constructs and maintains state roads and Keeps Utah Moving as safely and efficiently as possible.

Principal Duties
Our Transportation Technicians use a variety of computer systems, inspection tools and heavy machinery from snow plows to backhoes to do their work. Each Transportation Technician is expected to become proficient in areas of Maintenance and Construction, including but not limited to the following:

Performing general maintenance to roadway and drainage features.
Performing general maintenance on equipment.
Operation, maintenance, servicing and scheduling of the Vactor.
Removing snow from state roadways using snowplows/graders/blowers, etc.
Welding, plumbing, woodworking, landscaping, facility maintenance, and fabrication.
Performing construction inspection and documentation.
Performing materials testing and providing the associated required documentation to ensure features are constructed/installed according to project plans and specifications.
Performing materials sampling and testing along with the associated required documentation.
Working with contractors to complete construction, maintenance and permit projects.
Perform vegetation management including herbicide application.
Completing other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this position is someone who:

Has a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the "N" endorsement (an 'N' endorsement with a "K" restriction is acceptable for applicants under the age of 21) or is able to obtain within 60 days after hire through Department provided training.
Is able and willing to report to the Provo Canyon Maintenance Station, located at
658 N 1500 W, Orem, UT 84057 within a 30 minute response time.
Is able and willing to provide 24 hour availability.
Self provides a smartphone with data and will be eligible to receive a monthly taxable allowance to offset the cost of cell plans. See UDOT Policy 02-26 Cell Phones .
Is able and willing to complete continued education in the UDOT Transportation Education Program (TEP).
Is able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
Is reliable.
Has a positive attitude.
Is self motivated.
Is willing to learn, improve and develop new skills.

This position may be filled at the Transportation Technician I level for applicants who do not meet the preferences listed below. In order to qualify at the Transportation Technician I level applicants must have a class "A" CDL or be able to obtain one within 60 days of hire. After hire, applicant will need to complete all TEP, maintenance equipment, and construction certification requirements.

Preferences
Preference may be given to applicants who have:

A Class "A" Commercial Driver's License.
Transportation Education Program (TEP) Transportation Technician II Training.
UDOT maintenance/construction experience
Professional work experience operating, servicing and maintaining heavy equipment.
Professional work experience with and/or knowledge of roadway maintenance/construction and snow removal.

This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
This position requires you to frequently be exposed to hazards and discomforts of traffic and environmental conditions due to the nature of the work assignment.

Tasks

Study traffic delays by noting times of delays, the numbers of vehicles affected, and vehicle speed through the delay area.

Interact with the public to answer traffic-related questions, respond to complaints or requests, or discuss traffic control ordinances, plans, policies, or procedures.

Prepare graphs, charts, diagrams, or other aids to illustrate observations or conclusions.

Analyze data related to traffic flow, accident rates, or proposed development to determine the most efficient methods to expedite traffic flow.

Prepare work orders for repair, maintenance, or changes in traffic systems.

Plan, design, and improve components of traffic control systems to accommodate current or projected traffic and to increase usability and efficiency.

Compute time settings for traffic signals or speed restrictions, using standard formulas.

Prepare drawings of proposed signal installations or other control devices, using drafting instruments or computer-automated drafting equipment.

Study factors affecting traffic conditions, such as lighting or sign and marking visibility, to assess their effectiveness.

Gather and compile data from hand count sheets, machine count tapes, or radar speed checks and code data for computer input.

Measure and record the speed of vehicular traffic, using electrical timing devices or radar equipment.

Lay out pavement markings for striping crews.

Provide technical supervision regarding traffic control devices to other traffic technicians or laborers.

Operate counters and record data to assess the volume, type, and movement of vehicular or pedestrian traffic at specified times.

Place and secure automatic counters, using power tools, and retrieve counters after counting periods end.

Review traffic control or barricade plans to issue permits for parades or other special events or for construction work that affects rights of way, providing assistance with plan preparation or revision, as necessary.

Time stoplights or other delays, using stopwatches.

Maintain or make minor adjustments or field repairs to equipment used in surveys, including the replacement of parts on traffic data gathering devices.

Visit development or work sites to determine projects' effect on traffic and the adequacy of traffic control and safety plans or to suggest traffic control measures.

Establish procedures for street closures or for repair or construction projects.

Provide traffic information, such as road conditions, to the public.

Monitor street or utility projects for compliance to traffic control permit conditions.

Develop plans or long-range strategies for providing adequate parking space.

Interview motorists about specific intersections or highways to gather road-condition information for use in planning.
